IPL 7 2014

IPL: KXIP thrash host RCB

BANGALORE: The Kings XI Punjab continued to roll as they convincingly thrashed hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore by 32 runs in an IPL match, collecting their seventh win of the tournament

After putting into bat, KXIP batsmen again fired unison to score an imposing 198 for eight with in-form David Miller smashing 66 off 29 balls.

In reply, RCB could manage only 166 for nine as AB de Villiers ran out of partners despite another heroic effort hitting 53 off 26 balls.

Sandeep Sharma again proved his mettle with early strikes as he had another terrific day with figures of 3 for 25. But the surprise package was an unheralded 20-year-old off-spinner Shivam Sharma playing his first competitive match at the senior level.

Bowling like a classical off-break bowler, who could both flight and turn the ball, Shivam had brilliant figures of two for 26 in four overs to show for his efforts.

KXIP remain on top of the table with 14 points from eight games while RCB stay on sixth place with six points from eight games.

IPL: Brendon McCullum sizzles as Chennai Super Kings post 148/3 against Kolkata Knight Riders

Brendon McCullum sizzled with an enterprising half-century after the Indian Premier League arrived in the country to the pitter-patter of rain, powering Chennai Super Kings to a daunting 148 for three against Kolkata Knight Riders here today.
McCullum pulverised the Knight Riders attack during a 40-ball 56, which contained five boundaries and two sixes.
In a contest that was reduced to 17 overs per side after rain delayed the start by an hour and 40 minutes, CSK also got valuable contribution from Suresh Raina (31).
Mahendra Singh Dhoni (22) and Ravindra Jadeja (17) remained not out.
Opting to bat, the two-time former champions raced away to 20 before Shakib Al Hasan, who opened the bowling for KKR, dismissed Dwayne Smith in the third bowl of the third over.
Going for a sweep, Smith, after kick-starting the innings with a boundary, missed the line to be trapped in front of the wicket for a 11-ball 16 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.
McCullum, however, carried on and pulled R Vinay Kumar with utter contempt over the deep midwicket fence for a maximum.
Another short one from Piyush Chawla was dispatched over the on side for a boundary by McCullum.
KKR bowlers, especially Vinay Kumar, was guilty of bowling too short and McCullum took full advantage pulling him for two more fours.
Suresh Raina, meanwhile, was content playing the second fiddle to the New Zealander, before he lofted Chawla straight down the pitch for a massive six. Using his wrists, the left-handed batsman found the gap between deep midwicket and long on for another four, before driving Shakib through the covers.
However, a waist-height full toss from Shakib did the trick for KKR with Raina holing out at long on in the 11th over, even as CSK inched towards 100. Rain faced 25 balls for his knock, which had four boundaries and a six.
Jacques Kallis was introduced in the 12th over and he was greeted with a six by McCullum, which also brought up his fifty.
But Andre Russell got the burly Kiwi batsman after he had him caught at deep point in his very first over, leaving skipper Dhoni to do the hitting in the innings' final over that fetched 15 runs.

Dubai: Mumbai Indians will leave the UAE shores without a single victory in the first leg of IPL 7 as the defending champions slumped to their fifth straight defeat after losing tonight's contest by 15 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad, here.

Powered by David Warner's fighting 65-run knock and his stellar 111-run partnership with Lokesh Rahul (46), Hyderabad overcame a shaky start to score a competitive 172 for five after being invited to bat.

After losing three quick wickets, Mumbai fought through big-hitting Kieron Pollard (78) and Ambati Rayudu (35 off 27) but all they could manage was 157 for seven in the end.

The defeat means that Mumbai Indians now need to win most of the nine matches in the Indian leg to make it to the knockout stage of the tournament.

Pollard prevented it from becoming a one-sided match with his scintillating 48-ball knock, embellished with six sixes and three fours.

Irfan Pathan bowled Pollard in the first ball of the final over, in which Mumbai needed 20 runs. It was Pollard, who had brought Mumbai this far and his wicket at the crucial juncture dashed hopes of the defending champions.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar also played a stellar role in Hyderabad's win as he gave away just 17 runs in his four overs and also took two wickets.

Led by a ferocious Dale Steyn, the SRH attack rocked the Mumbai top order by taking three quick wickets. Bhuvaneshwar was incredible in his two-over spell as he conceded just three runs and also got the rival skipper Rohit Sharma (1).

An intimidating Steyn had Corey Anderson (1) caught on a well-directed bouncer. Darren Sammy joined the party by castling opener Ben Dunk (20), reducing Mumbai to 31 for 3 inside powerplay overs.

Pollard and Rayudu brought some respectability to the Mumbai's chase with their fighting knocks. The tall West Indian hit spinner Amit Mishra for two sixes and a four in the 13th over and dispatched Karan Sharma for a humongous hit in the next over to raise hopes of a turnaround.
32 runs in those two overs made it a contest and Mumbai now required 74 runs in 36 balls. Dhawan brought Bhuvaneshwar back into the attack and the paceman continued his with good form, conceding just six runs from his third over.

Pathan broke the stand by dismissing Rayudu but there was no stopping Pollard, who again took Mishra (0/54) to cleaners by hitting him for three consecutive sixes and a four in the 17 over.

Earlier, Warner worked hard for runs initially but once he got his eye in and was settled, the Australian left-hander scored runs at a brisk pace. He hit more sixes (4) than fours (1) in his 51-ball knock before departing towards the end of the SRH innings.
